For those who love sugar, but shouldn’t abuse it, here are some natural sugar substitutes.

Those of us with a sweet tooth know how addictive sugar is. But unfortunately you can’t abuse it, as it’s not the best thing you can put in your body. And much less for a person suffering from diabetes. Luckily, here we will show you some natural sugar substitutes, so you can continue to enjoy the sweet but taking care of your body.

Stevia

Stevia is a natural sweetener from the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It is extracted from the leaf and contains no calories. In addition, several studies have shown that it doesn’t affect blood sugar levels, as its glycemic index is 0, making it a perfect choice for sugar-loving diabetics. It can be found in most supermarkets in several options: liquid or powder.

Xylitol or Birch Molasses

Xylitol is a polyol that, because of its similar taste to sugar, is used as a sugar substitute. It can be extracted from corn or birch and is also a component of several fruits and vegetables, such as cauliflower, berries and plums. Unlike stevia, xylitol contains 2.4 calories per gram, 40% less than sugar, but it also doesn’t affect blood sugar levels, so it is another great option for diabetics.

Erythritol

Like Xylitol, Erythritol is a polyol, but it has fewer calories, 0.24 calories per gram in particular. In addition, it also tastes very similar to sugar so it is very easy to substitute and does not affect sugar levels. It can be found naturally in fruit (strawberries, pears, melon and grapes) and can be extracted from mushrooms and corn. The downside of this option is that it is a rather expensive sweetener, as the kilo usually costs between 7 and 10 euros.

Honey

Honey is one of the most famous substitutes and it is also very tasty. But I’m sorry to say that it’s not the best option, neither for diabetics nor non-diabetics. Although it provides more than sugar nutritionally speaking, it is composed of 82% glucose and therefore alters blood sugar levels. In any case, one of the benefits of substituting honey for sugar is that the former is sweeter, and the same sweetness can be achieved with less quantity.

Agave Syrup

Agave syrup has the same problem as honey. It’s much more suitable than sugar because it doesn’t provide nutrients, but being high in fructose affects your sugar levels. Nevertheless, it has a lower glycemic index than honey and sugar. It’s also a suitable option for vegans.
