Christmas is a time to enjoy and eat food that you wouldn’t normally eat at other times of the year. But that’s why you have to get diabetes under control this Christmas.

To help manage your diabetes this Christmas, try these tips to make your holiday occasions a little healthier:

Fill with the variety of veggies available, but watch out for holiday goodies like honey as these are free added sugars. Also watch out for hidden sugars in condiments like cranberry sauce, mint sauce, and prawn cocktail sauce.

Your decisions are important

Watch for portion sizes. Fill your plate with veggies first, as we tend not to get enough of them. Serve yourself if possible. Someone else may serve you too much food, so choosing your own starchy carbohydrate options, snacks, or treats will help you keep your blood sugar levels to get diabetes under control this Christmas.

If you’re eating dessert, try to stick with a serving of candy and figure out what to serve it with. Could you have plain yogurt instead of double cream, for example?
